Samuel "Spooky Sam" Hanes is a character role-played by Tormy.
Description[]
Sam Hanes is a white-haired male who most often wears a jack o' lantern mask. Sam also wears other "costumes" for various reasons, taking on a new name and persona with each of them. To date he has taken on many such costumed personas, including Officer Oscar Occifer, Dr. Deeth, and The Slimmerman, among others.
Sam considers every day to be Halloween and enjoys scaring people. He collects masks and harvests human body parts, both of which he sells. Sam states that his ultimate goal is to buy and operate an authentic haunted house. This apparently includes authentic bodies, authentic ghosts, and authentic murderers.
While wearing a costume, Sam pursues other goals based on the character he is pretending to be. For example, making cursed VHS tapes and predicting people's deaths while dressed as The Slimmerman.
Sam is fond of telling others that they've seen him in the city many more times than they realize.
Sam is also likely the sole motivating force behind Los Santos' black market organ trade. He occasionally trains others in the "art" of harvesting parts from the dead. He refers to the parts as "props", and has gone so far as to create and sell actual body part props to further conceal which transactions are which.
Sam does not respect people who refer to themselves as, or accept the moniker of, "serial killer". Further, he sees them as attention-seekers, often questioning why they so desperately want to be caught and analyzed. For this reason, he has made enemies of multiple serial killers in the city, including the Smileys. Sam will sometimes impersonate or undermine serial killers in order to ruin their reputation.
Business Ventures[]
Mask Rave[]
Sam's first approved business, Mask Rave, is a Halloween prop and costume shop. It began with random pop-up locations where Sam would sell random mask and hats he had found, along with body parts. These locations were set up in "abandoned" storefronts and were filled with Halloween décor in the form of emoji scenes. Local shopkeepers, such as the ones in Ammu-Nation and Digital Den, would be "dressed" in costumes.
Originally, these pop-up locations were called "Spirit Halloween". This changed when Sam first set out to make his business official, a process which took six months due to multiple unexplained delays from City Hall.
Under the Mask Rave banner, Sam also produced multiple products for the Farmer's Market, including creepy "pocket pests", horror props, and actual fake body parts. He has also produced a line of "scary food" to compete with the cute food offered by UwU Café.
Sam's body part props are created from molds that have been made using real human parts. Current body part props sold by Sam have been made from the cadavers of Oswald Tinkerman, Chase Clouter's brothers Based Louder and Space Outer, as well as Sai Carter's trigger finger. To attain the parts, Sam raids the morgue after learning of someone's permanent demise.
Mask Rave's main office is located in the Party Basket building.
Shelf Respect[]
Sam attempted to start an award and memorial business under the name "Shelf Respect". This business endeavor suffered a "lost" application and multiple rejections. To date, no reason has been offered for these rejections. Sam went so far as to pay a small bribe to then mayor Abdul AlRahim in return for approval of his business proposal. Nonetheless, the business was not approved.
Sam opened Shelf Respect as a farmer's market booth, where he sold items under the costumed persona "Mr. Memoriam". These items included everything from medals and trophies to burial urns and death certificates. The concept behind Shelf Respect was apparently that the more "normal" items would bring in the most revenue, while the more "odd" items such as toe tags would be provided as niche items for more specific customer needs.
Shelf Respect met an end when another award storefront opened months later, and Sam was informed he now couldn't have awards at all.
Deck 'N Hand[]
With the help of Anna Swallows, Sam produced several trading cards. The cards have sold well, with Sam enlisting the help of Jeff Spencer and Kirk Jerkems to sell them throughout the city. Said cards include an eye chart, a trap card, and a -1 penalty card among others.
Unfortunately, acrimony between Swallows and James Arsenal resulted in the endeavor being halted, with Arsenal feeling any and all card production should have gone through his company, the NoPixel Trading Card Game. Though Sam had requested cards from Arsenal months earlier with no response, he once again contacted Arsenal afterward in order to attempt further card production. Arsenal refused to work with Sam due to his work for Swallows, but then agreed to help - before again never responding.
This lead Sam to file a business proposal for "Deck 'N Hand", a company that would ideally be able to compete with NoPixel Cards and hopefully help citizens get their custom card orders fulfilled. Unfortunately, this endeavor has been blocked by City Hall in favor of having only one card provider in the city.
Deck 'N Hand's main office was located in the Bishop's WTF?! building, but the location was taken away from Sam and given to someone else without warning, due to City Hall not checking if it was already owned.
Final Act[]
"Final Act" is a business that provides acting classes, improv lessons, and roleplaying workshops to the people of Los Santos. Making use of Sam's connection to the Clown Cartel, the company employs clowns, among others, in order to provide these classes. Employees so far include Jagger Gerardy (Comedy Coach), Bobby Beldrum (Acting Coach), Ellie Dono (Improv Coach), and Georgina Williams (Roleplaying Coach).
Final Act's main office is located in the Acting Up building.
Household Order Bin Operations (HOBO)[]
HOBO is a trash collection company that owns almost every dumpster in Los Santos. As the owner of HOBO, Sam hoped to handle biohazards and other disposal needs, such as cleaning up local corpses. Ideally, the company would eventually be in service of Pillbox Medical Center and the Los Santos Police Department, with services offered to other clients as well. Sam hoped to provide cleaning staff to locations throughout the city, as well as services to businesses with dumpster access.
The business was approved, but then quickly and secretly unapproved with no discussion because Rooster's Rest didn't want its trash removed.
Waffle Stop[]
Waffle Stop is a breakfast-all-day restaurant that serves pancake, waffle, and egg platters among other gobstopping, heart-clogging options. Run like a greasy spoon, the business hopes to provide more affordable, yet worse, food to the lower rungs of society. Poor service, rude staff, and parking lot fist fights are major goals for Waffle Stop, which hopes to provide an "authentic 3AM waffle restaurant experience" to customers.
This business is currently in development hell due to City Hall preventing citizens from opening competition for current restaurants.
Misery Inc.[]
Misery Inc. Funeral Home & Mortuary is Sam's step toward making organ harvesting legal through more strictly controlled collection from already-dead locals. Through this business, Sam has been approved to collect human remains by both city hall and police. Sam provides these items for free to hospital staff (for transplants) and police (for research).
Misery Inc. was originally located in the Strawberry Funeral Home & Mortuary next to the hospital. However, the business location was quickly taken away by Deputy Mayor Babis Joestaridis for his own use (through a friend's company) with no discussion. Sam only found out when he saw someone else's storefront already in the building.
Book Publishing[]
After learning how to produce books from Ursula Leichenberg, Sam authored "The Halloween Mask". The story is written from the perspective of the victim of a Halloween night home invasion, and the antagonist very much resembles Samuel Hanes, right down to the name "Spooky Sam". The amount of truth and/or fiction in the story is not yet determined. Interest in books in general was so low that Sam gave up plans to produce more.
Custom Mask Imports[]
Sam approached a clothing designer via a Yellow Page ad, with the interest of bringing custom masks to the city. After a positive and productive discussion, Sam set about designing many images that would be printed onto masks and presumably sold by his company, Mask Rave.
The designer stated that he had connections with the federal government, and that he could help import the end result product. He ended up having no such connections, and simply emailed Sam s a handful of files, telling Sam to find out how to import them himself. Sam lost a total of $80,000 after paying the designer for the service he could not provide. Currently, over 30 original mask designs are in limbo.
Criminal Record[]
Sam has had several run-ins with Police and the Department of Justice which have made him adversarial to both. This has included being arrested for, and convicted of, crimes he actually did not commit, as well as watching officers commit perjury multiple times during his trials. In multiple instances, Judges have expressed their direct bias against him (such as presuming he is a serial killer) in no uncertain terms before or after trying his cases. Sam has also received FOIA-requested raid documentation that listed falsified information as reason for search.
Sam believes that since he has yet to actually be caught and convicted for his main "criminal enterprise", police have resorted to desperate measures to put him in prison for whatever they can. Whether or not this is true, it's what he's come to believe based on aforementioned events.
Charges Sam has been arrested and/or convicted of include things such as harassment for speaking while an officer was speaking. Such charges, coupled with other DOJ behaviors, have left Sam completely oppositional to law enforcement.
The only exceptions to Sam's hatred of Police are Demi Black, Crystal Clear, and Randy Wrangler - who he respects for instilling fear in the entire city.
Criminal Connections[]
Sam is most directly associated with the Clowncil, but has additional one-on-one connections within Block Gang, Bondi Boys MC, and more. Usually, Sam makes these connections by providing free or cheap products to these groups. Sam is known as "Body Block" to Mike Block. Sam also has clientele throughout the city who purchase organs and body parts from him, though he does not usually lean on these connections for personal benefit.
Sam is adversarial toward the Smileys, due to his dislike of "attention-seeking" serial killers. He also does not like the HOA or The Families due to instances where he was attacked/shot for, in his words, "being interesting in their vicinity".
Background[]
Sam's childhood was spent in a strictly religious household, where he was prohibited from celebrating Halloween. Everything he enjoyed as a child was eventually deemed "Satanic" by his family's church, leading to his parents consistently throwing his possessions in the trash. As a result, Sam hates when people waste things someone else could use or have fun with.
His parents and sister were apparently killed via a home invasion when he was a child, resulting in his sister passing away while waiting for organ transplants. To date, Sam has only entrusted Demi Black with this information.
Sam has stated that soft-spoken, timid, and/or sad women remind him of his sister.
Death[]
Sam died after eating poisonous cave pumpkins.
