Mattias is a character role-played by CaptainBarb.

Description[]

Mattias is the Vice President of Mayhem MC. He has little to no filter, and will tell people what he thinks of them if it comes to his mind.

Background[]

Mattias initially joined the Swedish army the day he turned 18, as a detriment offer from the police after he was caught breaking into a house when he was 17. Community service, and military service when he turned 18 in place of jail time and a criminal record. The first couple of decades of his life were harsh, having grown up with no father figure in his life to guide him, he ended up hanging out with the wrong crowds, somehow evading the law as he committed petty crime for years until his luck ran out. However, a couple of years in the military had a profound effect on him, and ignited a sense of honor and loyalty that his ancestors; the vikings of old, had passed down for generations that had been dormant until then. He adapted, and excelled in his new environment, quickly catching the attention of his superiors. He was recruited into Särskilda, the Swedish Special Forces at 20 years old, the youngest ever to date, and trained among the elite soldiers, specializing in special security detachment. It quickly became apparent however, that while his military service had changed him, he was still himself, and his methods deemed too brash for most. His colleagues often complained that while he succeeded in every assignment, it was often due to having put others at risk. After 12 years of service, he became increasingly sick and tired of disciplinary hearings, and the endless bureaucracy of a government military. His argument that he always got the job done, with a zero failure rate got him out of any formal disciplinary action, but as he grew older, the fire of patriotism began to fade. He finished his rotation, packed up and left, taking his skills elsewhere. He started a private security firm in Caracas, Venezuela, where his unique operating procedures were far better suited to the lawless and war-torn streets. Here, he could operate under his own rules as he escorted pompous rich folk around Caracas, confident that he could get the job done, and the client can’t complain, since the alternative is losing their head, which as it turns out is a lucrative business. He hired an administrator; Fiona Taylor, to run the businesses finances in the background. The two quickly grew close, and began dating not long after.

He kept his business large enough to attract a constant stream of customers, but small enough to operate within Caracas and the surrounding area, and no further. He likes control, and if the business grew any larger he’d end up having to hand over operational control to someone else. This turned out to be extremely successful, and he found himself essentially unofficially ruling over the streets of Caracas. So much so that some clients needed only to purchase his services on paper to deter attackers from having to deal with Nilson Security Services, and he didn’t even have to show up.

This went on for several years, and he enjoyed every moment of it. Caracas was his playground, with nobody to tell him otherwise, especially not the authorities after a small cash donation. However, this made him cocky, and complacent, and back-alley pirates with AK47’s made for little to no challenge, fueling carelessness. He got sloppy, and it was only a matter of time before he stepped on a landmine which finally came in the form of a U.N Peace summit. When rumors came out that the Chinese armed forces were backing rebels in the area to keep the economy tanked, Mattias was contracted to escort a Saudi prince that was sponsoring the summit to the venue. It was going swimmingly until the client made a comment about the cleanliness of the armored vehicle, something about not liking the bullet casings and dried blood. Whatever. Mattias made an off-handed comment that truthfully he can’t even remember, which initially seemed to have no effect on the client.

The drop was made at the venue, job done, and Mattias returned to his HQ to find it fully ablaze. In hindsight, he couldn’t help but be impressed at the efficiency of the hit, but he knew his time in Venezuela had immediately come to an end. Fight or flight, and given the fact his Military Contracting business was on fire, even he had to admit defeat. With nothing but a wad of cash and the clothes on his back, he managed to purchase a seat on a cocaine runners plane bound for Los Santos, taking off from a makeshift runway just in time for several black SUV’s and a small army to arrive to finish off the job. He never heard from Fiona again.

Psychological Profile[]

Mattias is a wild card. He is quiet but when he speaks he has no filter no and shame in saying what he's thinking, yet remains confused when people take offense. Nobody knows what to do with him, including his superiors who find him extremely talented and useful, yet are constantly frustrated with his methods. In 2001 Mattias was involved in a hostage rescue operation in a bank robbery. After two days of failed negotiations, and increasingly uncooperative terrorists, the Fahrenheit order was made, and SOG was deployed to eliminate all hostiles. At 0300 hours a team of 6 operators covertly breached the building from a service entrance, and quietly eliminated four of the five hostiles, only to discover the last target guarding the hostages was equipped with an explosive vest. They were ordered to fall back to continue negotiations, but Mattias disobeyed the order, seeing an opportunity to end the situation. With a single shot, he killed the target. Following the event, all video footage of the operation was immediately classified, and team-leader Oscar Kötz was credited with the safe retrieval of the hostages. Mattias was placed on administrative leave pending investigation, which resulted in no formal action but was transferred to another SOG branch in Special Security Detachment. It is speculated that his only saving grace was a clean shot with no collateral damage. This appears to be the case for every incident report in his file, as he somehow consistently proves himself to be predictably unpredictable.

Psychological Report[]

"Knowing that Specialist Mattias Nilson is cynical toward bureaucracy and somewhat of a narcissist, I wasn't surprised that he was reluctant to meet me. Much like his methods, I needed a different approach.

Nilson has a distinguished record of military service. He's respected and in some cases idolized by those he mentors. When he welcomed me to his home, I could see why people describe him as down-to-earth. There's more to Nilson's gruff, no-nonsense exterior - it just required some effort for him to trust me.

Raised in a coastal town, Nilson has a strong connection with the water. We spent our entire meeting on the deck he built himself, overlooking the cold sea. Being someone who isn't handy - mastering a paper airplane as a kid was the peak of my craft - I wanted to know what Nilson likes about building and working with his hands. He told me that besides appreciating the precision of it, he liked shaping the wood into something that has purpose. I suggested it was similar to how he mentors recruits. He replied that he doesn't care about the "why" of things the us "Uni types" do.

Specialist Mikael is one of his few close friends and Nilson's tolerance of Specialist Anders surprised me, since Nilson is impatient with youthful bluster. When asked, Nilson would only say, "Anders is a clever kid." He sounded almost envious. I wonder if Anders reflects someone Nilson wishes he had been. After reading his...extensive file of incident reports, I was surprised to see him step to Anders' defense in an altercation between some of the operators. Nilson is an enigma. Sometimes he shows little to no care for others and puts them at risk to complete the mission, and sometimes he shows true altruism toward his colleagues. Perhaps he is of two halves. A resentful youth that acts in spite of authorities, and his ancestral traditions of honor-bound warriors, both fighting for control over him. I fear he's going to get himself hurt, but our conversation is a start. I believe I can help him help himself, and rein in control of his actions.

His colleagues describe him as ruthless and reckless. I disagree. I think he's resourceful. He could go far, providing a different approach and thinking outside the box, if only he would stop focusing so much on completing the mission and taking things slower.

I digress.

While by no means a Luddite, Nilson does have an aversion to technology. To him, it's a tool nothing more. The idea that people come to rely on it as a crutch is what annoys him. I suggested that he spend time in the engineering lab with Specialist Mikael. They have a lot to teach one another."
