Etta Hawthorne is a character role-played by sunstonefire.

Description[]

Etta Hawthorne served as the first Treasurer of the inaugural City Council of Los Santos. She is currently a Resident for Los Santos Medical Group.

She was previously an Advanced-EMT for the Emergency Medical Services, Call-Sign Alpha-20.

Background Information[]

Esther "Etta" Marguerite Hawthorne was born and raised in Texas. Her father, Elijah, was killed in a car accident when she was 10, so she was raised alone by her mother, Faith. Being a botanist, her mother nurtured a deep love of plants and nature in Etta. As a child, Etta could often be found out in the fields, collecting wildflowers and singing loudly. Other times, you could spot her climbing trees, leaves in her chocolate brown hair, like some tiny and wild forest sprite.

She held to that wild nature through her teenage years as well. Preferring nature hikes or rock climbing on the weekends instead of trips to the mall with friends. She studied the symbology of flowers and took flower arranging classes at the nearby florist shop. Her mother often teased her about caring more about nature than people. Half jokingly, Etta laughed and said, "Plants never betray you. If you care for them and give them what they need, they'll repay you." Needless to say, when Rebecca, the cute girl at the farmer's market had asked her out for ice cream, Faith was actually surprised when she heard her daughter agree to go on the date.

In college, Etta followed in her mother's footsteps and studied Botany with a minor in Environmental Studies. It was here that Etta developed a fervent stance on protecting the environment. She became involved with a local group on campus that worked towards bringing awareness and educating their peers on dangers to the ecosystem. Encouraging recycling and even protesting a local development that put a nearby nature park at risk. College was also were she found her spirituality. Blending her love of nature with the Goddess divine she would often visit with nearby pagans to learn herbalism and the magickal symbology behind plants and flowers.

After graduating, she took an environmental scientist position with a company in Dallas. Though she enjoyed the challenges that the job provided, she longed for something else. She just wasn't sure what it was yet.

Shortly after Etta's 23rd birthday, Faith suffered a stroke. Without a second thought, Etta packed up her things and moved back home to help her mother. She was with her through every therapy session and maintained the large greenhouse at the back of their property. There, she doted lovingly on all of the flowers and greenery as her mother walked her through soil types and water saturation levels to help the plant flourish. This helped Faith recover her speech as well. They ran a little business out of their home selling potted plants and luscious flower arrangements. Two years later, after her mother had recovered the majority of her function, she told Etta that she would be selling the farm and going to live with her sister as it was just too much for her to handle on her own.

Etta had always loved how flowers could brighten someone's wretched day. They helped people celebrate the greatest triumphs in life. They also helped show comfort and support in times of great sorrow. She had always found comfort in nature, so why not bring that to others? She had the experience now. She just had to find the courage to take the first step.

One night, after too many margaritas, Etta steeled herself and decided that she would choose a random location and find her way there. She rolled out a map and closed her eyes. Whipping her finger in a circle 3 times she planted it down and peeked through half closed lids. Los Santos.

During Etta's time in Los Santos, she was a manager for Fast Loans, a manager/assistant admin for Harmony Repairs Garage, a senior bartender at the Liquid Library, and a Trainee for the Emergency Medical Services, Call-Sign Tango-79. Etta was also a Deputy Mayor for the last three Mayors of Los Santos before the government collapsed due to the devastation of the Sanguine Isle war.

She got married to Shawn Maple on September 13th, 2024.

Notable Events[]

5 Year Gap

Etta settled in the city of Logrono, Spain with her brother, Flop, and his husband, Ziggy. She utilized her degree in Botany to help run a community garden where she worked to improve upon and educate residents there how best to grow their very own produce. She sold off all of her cars, so her only forms of transportation were her bicycle and her own two legs. For long trips, she rented a moped.

Still wanting to do more for others, she volunteered with the local EMS there. She took the skills taught to her by her best friend, Kiki, and grew from a little trainee to an actual medic. Flop taught her how to swim, although deep ocean water still terrifies her. Through therapy and meditation, Etta worked on letting go of the anger, guilt and despair that had plagued her final months in Los Santos. She was able to heal and move on from the heartbreak of losing Beric.

They spent every Christmas and New Year with Matt and Richard in England. Etta and Richard kept in touch through emails. Matt and Flop were notoriously bad about remembering to call or write, so Richard and Etta made sure to keep the other side updated.

Tanner had come to Spain for a couple of weeks to help her move and unpack. She spent a week every summer with Balto Connelly at his animal sanctuary in Colorado. Flew to Georgia to be a bridesmaid for Shirley Lemons when she married Basil. And Shawn Maple came to visit her in the weeks before she left Spain where they rekindled the friendship that had begun shortly before she moved away.

She received a letter from Kiki asking her to come back and help form a skeleton crew for EMS as the city was attempting to rebuild itself after the financial collapse it suffered shortly after the war. Her brother, Flop, had received one for PD as well. So Etta, Flop, and Ziggy packed their things and made their way back to Los Santos to start anew.

First Treasurer of Los Santos

On January 5, 2024, a committee of Chief Justice Alan Crane, Interim Mayor Lila Wright, and County Clerk Alex Mushkin-Domino interviewed applicants for the Treasurer seat on the first-ever City Council in Los Santos. Having served as Deputy Mayor for the last three Mayors of the old Los Santos, Etta stood out as someone who knew precisely what kind of missteps that Crane and Lila wanted to avoid in government. Subsequently on January 15, 2024, Etta was appointed the first-ever Treasurer of Los Santos.

Notably in the City Council legislative meeting on February 3, 2024, Treasurer Etta was the sole nay vote dissenting against Mayor Maximilian Thoroughbred's proposed one-child policy (a.k.a. the Adoption Policy) because she was quite attached to her adopted family. The new law would nullify all claimed adoptions and make future unregulated ones punishable by an Adoption Fraud charge. The law passed with 7 yea votes and went into effect on February 7, 2024. Etta persuaded Mayor Thoroughbred and the City Council to amend the adoption policy to cut the adoption fee from $30,000 to $25,000, and to allow a second adoption for $50,000. Also, for people recognized by the Marriage Act to inherit the other's "adopted" individual. Later the cap was raised to allow a third adoption for $75,000. During the next election season, Mayor Thoroughbred ended up convincing all of the City Council to repeal the entire Adoption Policy and the adoption fraud charge on March 30, 2024.

Etta's relationship with Mayor Max deteriorated. His proposed Police Continuity Plan (which would mandate that the Los Santos Police Department to report to him) polarized the City Council, with even his own Chief of Staff Juno Sweeney opposed to it. Max fired her on February 23, 2024, and filled the Chief of Staff position with his own wife Siobhan Thoroughbred. Etta, Law Enforcement Liaison Malcolm Nekoda, and Healthcare Liaison Philippa Canter all voted nay against the legislation on February 24, 2024--but were in the minority. The legislation still passed, and Max held a grudge against the three dissenters.

When Max was re-elected as Mayor of Los Santos on April 20, 2024, he lowered the pay of both Los Santos Medical Group doctors and Emergency Medical Services to $250 an hour to teach them a lesson. In response, Etta proposed her first piece of legislation to Chief Justice Alan Crane called "The Economic Transparency, Tracking and Accountability Act" (written by Nekoda, who had lost re-election to Cletus Cornwood). However, Etta's term was expiring--and Crane and Head County Clerk Alex Mushkin-Domino (later promoted to Chief Clerk) started a new round of interviews for the Treasurer position on April 25, 2024. Etta ran for a second term as Treasurer. Given that Crane regarded the Treasurer as a check against embezzlement, he and Alex weighed whether a more adversarial option like Etta was better than an applicant who might push back against Mayor Max less. On April 27, 2024, Crane and Alex re-interviewed Etta for Treasurer, who summed up her first Treasurer term as "spicy", "educational", and "exhausting". Given the intensity of Etta's past conflicts with Mayor Max, Crane doubted she could still work productively with him and favored new blood and fresh ideas in the form of Already Dead MC co-founder TJ Walker. Alex felt that Etta could reapply for Treasurer at a later time with a clean slate. On May 1, 2024, Crane (following a long deliberation with Chief Clerk Alex) notified both Mayor Max and his Chief of Staff Siobhan of the decision to appoint TJ Walker as the new City Council Treasurer despite their ongoing feud with the ADMC.
