After Benny told Ellie that he needed a lung transplant due to the radiation poisoning, and that he was planning on going alone to New York for the surgery Ellie offered to go with him. Having just won a bunch of money at the casino and not knowing what to even do with it as her and Valdez had everything they wanted she decided to get a penthouse suite and hired on private care for Benny for his recovery. Ellie asked Valdez to come with her because as much as she wanted to be there to support Benny, she wanted Valdez to be there to support her in case things didn't go well. They packed their bags, locked up the house, and hopped on a plane and headed out. During Bennys recovery process the news of the RICO case against BBMC got out so due to everything in NY being listed in Ellie's name they decided to stay there with Benny to keep him low key and under the radar. Benny had a few complications from the surgery so they decided to stay in NY longer than originally planned. While they stayed in NY for the most part they bounced around between seeing some of their old friends and family over the years. As much as Ellie was happy to keep Benny safe and make sure he was healthy, he was recovered as much as he was going to and after Ellie and Valdez took their last visit back home, seeing what it had become and wanting to help it rebuild they decided that it was time to stay. The money was running out, their house was now owned by the state and they decided that it was time for them to invest in their future again and repair the relationships that were once broken back home.
